Sourabhee Debbarms is Indian Shakira

She is the mover and shaker of Indian Idol.

A slip of a girl she may be, but she is a powerhouse performer when she takes the stage. Her hips don''t lie and neither do her lips for that matter.

Last week she had Hussain and Chang gape in awe as she shook her hip a la Shakira. This time she stunned one and all with her Nimbuda nimbuda… performance. Is it any surprise that she got a standing ovation from not only one but two judges?

Both Sonali and Annu Malek gave her a standing ovation for her outstanding performance. Annu Malek confessed it was the first time he was giving a standing ovation to any contestant on the show.

That is some achievement for the beauty who gave credit to her Chong Prang Group back home in Tripura with whom she sings. Watch out! This slender girl could well be the dark horse of Indian Idol 4.

Sourabhee Debbarmaa has become very boring

Surprised? But that is what the rock star from Tripura says. She feels she is more focussed on singing and less interested in forging new relationships. But that doesn’t mean she’s not having her share of fun. Read on.

How does it feel to be in the galas?

I’m really excited because I never expected this from myself. Now, whatever I achieve, I will be very happy with that.

Who is your toughest competitor?

As far as singing and voting goes, I am scared of Kapil Thapa. I like his voice quality and he sings well, especially romantic songs. And he gets a lot of votes from the Army and the gurkhalis.

Now that you have had a makeover, do you feel more confident?

After getting my haircut, I couldn’t recognise myself. I feel I look much better when compared to my old look. Now I will try to keep reinventing myself.

How have you changed as a singer and as a person after you entered Indian Idol?

I have changed a lot as a person. Earlier, I was a fun loving and frank girl. Now I have become really boring. I am very reserved—something I am not really. The people here are totally opposite to what I am and my nature. So I don’t really mingle too much—I stick to my rehearsals and riaz and when I get the time, I sleep.

Who is your favourite judge? Why?

I like Javedji. He is never rude and whatever he says is always right. He is also very polite.

Which judge''s comments do you fear the most? Why?

Of course, Annu Malek. Everyone is scared of him. If you look at his face you can never predict what will come out of his mouth. [Laughs.]

You have become small celebrities already. Has that affected you in any way?

I was a nobody. Now I have reached the galas, and, yes, I am a small celebrity. People recognise me. I guess that has affected me. Earlier, when I went out I would do all my pagalpanthis—I would shout and over react. Now I am more calm and composed. I am also careful of what I say.

The galas are going to be tough. How do you plan to tackle the competition and get more votes?

I think I perform a little better compared to the others. So I am going to concentrate on that, along with my singing. Earlier, I used to stand in the middle of the stage and not move. Now I’m trying to use the whole stage, including the ramp. I will also try to connect better with the audience.

Who do you get along with the best among the Top 14?

Remo and Kapil. They were my friends throughout the journey on Indian Idol.

Is there anyone here who you feel does not belong in the Top 14? And if you could bring back an eliminated contestant in his/her place, who would it be?

I feel Mohit doesn’t deserve to be here. I like his performance, but I didn’t like how he performed in the wild card round. I feel Charit was better and that he deserved to be in the Top 14. But if I were to bring someone back it would have to be Roshan. He is much better than Charita and Mohit—he has more experience and sings well.

Why do you think we should vote for you?

This is the first time that a girl from the North east has reached the galas. I feel I deserve to be in the Top 5—because I sing and perform well. I am working on my Hindi and I also have confidence. So they should vote for me.

Sourabhee in Love with Kapil Thapa

The Kapil-Sourabhee love story can be told now. In fact, Kapil himself confessed in as many words and that too on stage. When asked to sing a song, a romantic number, he sang Pehla pehla pyar… and went on to serenade a blushing Sourabhee. Her loving reply was a tad different. She sang Yeh ladka hai Allah kaisa hai deewana… it came straight from her heart – after all the two had their little lovers’ tiff and had been sulking for a while before that. Unlike other romances that bloom during reality shows and wilt without a trace immediately after, Kapil Thapa’s love story seems to be for real and here to stay – it is the word of honor of an Army man. And even when he returns to his regiment we hope he remains posted close to the North-East!

Is Sourabhee pining for Roshan

This snippet is taken from http://www.desitvforum.org/forum/indian-idol-4/13137-more-diary-sourabhee-pining-roshan.html but I don't know if that is the original source or not.

Is there some regional bonding going on in Indian Idol? Are Tripura and Kerala planning to merge boundaries and borders? Are Sourabhee and Roshan more than just friends? Hmmm… I’d like to say I know all the answers, but despite my prodding, digging and spying, my sources were not able to dish up any dirt.
So I approached Miss Hawa Hawaii herself. But all she was willing to admit was that she missed Roshan terribly. “We are not in love,” giggled Sourabhee. “But he was my best friend on the sets. We did everything together. We shared the same wavelength, we both loved masti and shararat, and we used to talk for hours—about our homes, our families and our friends.” But, hey, isn’t that how love begins?
I know for a fact that Roshan could not bear to leave Mumbai without seeing Sourabhee one last time. (Ok, he also wanted to see his other best friends, Kapil and Remo.) He waited for hours outside the studio. But because shooting did not wind up until very late that day, and because he could not miss his flight home, he had to leave without talking to her.
But Sourabhee assured me that she is still in contact with her ‘friend’. “Every alternate day we are given a cell phone for one hour. And I make it a point to call him every time and keep in touch,” she said. “He should have been with me here in the Top 14. He deserved to be.”
Oh we know, Sourabhee, we know. But then true love always wins! So here’s wishing you luck.
